If you know of a bird nest in the city of Ottawa and you are willing to record some simple observations over the next few weeks, you can contribute to an exciting scientific study and a long-term, public database.

We're building this public database of bird nest observations so that researchers, citizens, and planners will be able to measure the health of bird populations in our city.

Have a look at a selection of the nests that were monitored in 2007. This link will take you to a new page in Google Maps that includes selected nests from the 2007 database. The nest locations on this map are only approximate (the actual locations were up to 200 m away) to protect the privacy of the observers and the birds. If you are interested in accurate nest location information, contact the coordinator and we can arrange to transfer the data.

Thank you for taking some of your time to participate in an important citizen science project. With your help, we can learn how to build cities that can be productive habitat for people and for birds! As Rachel Carson once said:

"Those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life."

Please read the pages below for information on being part of our Nest Monitoring Program.

The information on these pages is based on information supplied by Bird Studies Canada (BSC). BSC's Project NestWatch is a similar, nest-monitoring program that combines efforts from regional programs to collect nest observations from across Canada. All of the nest observations collected through the OBC will be incorporated into the national database (so please don’t submit observations on the same nest to both programs). If you are experienced at safely observing nests and have participated in Project NestWatch or the Ontario Nest Records Scheme, please contact us. You may be interested in collecting more detailed information. If you have found a nest outside of the City of Ottawa, you should record those observations directly through the NestWatch website or to the provincial database, through the Ontario Nest Records Scheme.
